World Cup 2022: which teams are out of FIFA tournament?

Dec 2 (Reuters) – Here’s an overview of the teams knocked out as the World Cup in Qatar heads into the knockout stages, which will end on Dec. 18.

What is the format of the group stage?

* Round robin, 32 teams play three games in groups of four. A team gets three points for a win and one point for a draw.

* The top two from each group advance to the round of 16, with the knockout stage starting on 3 December, with one-off games going to extra time, followed by penalty shoot-outs if necessary.

Which teams qualify for the knockout stages?

*Group A: Netherlands and Senegal

*Group B: England and United States

*Group C: Argentina and Poland

*Group D: France and Australia

*Group E: Japan and Spain

*Group F: Morocco and Croatia

Which teams were eliminated from the World Cup?

* Hosts Qatar are the first side to be eliminated after defeats in Ecuador (2-0) and Senegal (3-1). They finished on one point after beating the Netherlands 2-0 in their final group game.


* Ecuador came very close to reaching the last 16 and equaling their best performance in 2006, but were eliminated after beating African champions Senegal 2-1.


* Despite being thrashed 6-2 by England in their Group B opener, Iran’s 2-0 win over Wales gave them a glimmer of hope in their historic march to the last 16.

* However, they were eliminated after a 0-1 loss to Team USA.


* Wales, participating in the Global Championship for the first time since 1958, are bottom of Group B with one point and one goal.


* Mexico missed the knockout rounds on goal difference behind Poland, ending a streak of seven straight World Cup rounds of 16 appearances.

* Mexico coach Tata Martino took full responsibility for their exit and said he would not extend his contract with the federation (FMF).

Saudi Arabia

* After Qatar opened with a stunning 2-1 win over Argentina, Saudi Arabia lost 2-0 to Poland and saw their hopes of beating Mexico 2-1 in the knockout stages dashed.


* Tunisia beat defending champions France 1-0 in their Group D final game, but it wasn’t enough to advance to the last 16 after they drew against Denmark and were beaten by Australia in their previous two games.


* Denmark are bottom of Group D after a draw with Tunisia and losses to France and Australia.


* Germany was eliminated from the World Cup group stage for the second time in a row, finishing third in Group E behind Japan and Spain.

* Costa Rica, who were knocked out after a 4-2 loss to Germany in their final Group E match, are three points behind after a 7-0 loss to Spain before beating Japan 1-0.


* Belgium are Group F favorites, having won just one of their three games to sit third in the group with four points.

* Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, who has been in charge since 2016 and led the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, said he would quit his job after the team pulled out.


* Canada, at the World Cup for the first time since 1986, finished bottom of Group F with three defeats.
