Luis Enrique has resigned as Spain manager after Spain were knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco.

The 52-year-old took charge in 2018 and led Spain to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, where they lost to Italy.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has said a “new project” should be launched, but has not confirmed when a new boss will be announced.

“We would like to thank Luis Enrique and his entire coaching staff,” RFEF said in a statement.

Spain beat Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening World Cup group match but their possession-based game saw them accused of being “boring” as they drew 1-1 with Germany and lost 2-1 in Japan.

Spain were eliminated on penalties after a goalless draw with Morocco on Tuesday.

Spain has won plaudits for its style and established itself as the world’s leading nation during its reign from 2008 to 2012 under Luis Aragones and Vicente del Bosque when they won the inaugural World Cup. won the European Cup twice in a row.

But the team has not won a major trophy since winning the European Championships in 2012. They have not advanced to the last 16 of the World Cup since winning the title in 2010.

Enrique’s most successful period as a club-level manager came at Barcelona. Between 2014 and 2017, he won the UEFA Champions League and led the team to two La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey titles, the Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the Spanish Super Cup.

After their tumultuous 2018 World Cup campaign, he took over as Spain’s head coach, replacing Fernando Hierro who stepped in two days before the game as Julen Lopeteguinn announced he would take over after the game. Real Madrid was sacked.

Former Spain midfielder Enrique briefly left his role in 2019 after his late daughter was diagnosed with bone cancer before returning to the squad for an impressive European Championship campaign which was stymied by the Covid-19 outbreak. -19 pandemic and delayed by a year.
