Valuations: Gallerist and Entrepreneur Easy Otabor on the Wardrobe Items He Holds Dear and the ‘Wickedly Smart’ Art of David Leggett

A few years ago, Otabor opened the Anthony Gallery, which features works by both emerging and internationally renowned artists in Chicago’s Fulton River District. It is part of their mission to make the art world more inclusive. “I want to create spaces that put people in a room who wouldn’t normally see each other…places where everyone is welcome,” he said in a statement.

Throughout 2022, the gallery resides at the Rebuild Foundation’s Stony Island Arts Bank (SIAB). There, he’s organized exhibitions like “Tom Sachs: Furniture” — the artist’s first solo show in Chicago, not to mention his first furnishing in two decades — to help expand the Windy City as a cultural destination while making art more accessible. on the south side.

Meanwhile, Otabor is working with Nina Chanel Abney and Pharrell Williams on GODA (Gallery of Digital Assets), a new NFT marketplace for contemporary artists.

Between that and the opening of Anthony Gallery’s latest show, “Come As You Are” (through Dec. 11)—the sixth and final installation of his SIAB residency—features works by artists including Abney, Sere Gomez, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Chase Hall, Lorraine. Halsey, Rasheed Johnson, Barbara Kruger, Sterling Ruby and Sachs—Otabor took some time to answer our valuation questionnaire.

What’s the last thing you splurged on?

Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-thin 50th Anniversary wristwatch. I value my time, obviously.

What’s something you’ve been saving up for?

A house in Los Angeles. I previously lived in LA and have a large network of friends and business associates there. Plus, escaping the Chicago winter won’t hurt.

What do you value most in a work of art?

Art show followed by dinner. I just want a nice meal.

Henry Swanson. Their pairing of fine-art techniques and inexpensive materials (found rugs, linoleum floor panels, etc.) is a reminder not to take yourself too seriously while still showing off your skills.

Who is an overlooked artist who has yet to receive his due?

David Leggett is incredibly talented. The way he incorporates pop culture, racial injustice and relationships into his art is wickedly smart.

What is your most prized possession?

My peace of mind.

What is your best investment?

That’s when I finally decided to start investing in myself – working out, eating well. I take time to watch informative videos like Shankar Vedantam’s TedTalk, “You really don’t know what your future holds.”

What’s one little thing that means the world to you?

A pair of Nike Air Jordan 4 Brids. They bring back so many great memories from my entire life.
