Actor Danny Ramirez says the cast of “Top Gun Maverick” got pretty competitive in the gym while filming the sequel to the 1986 movie that made Tom Cruise an icon.
“There’s been a lot of competition with the guys since the beginning of filming when it came to working out,” he told Page Six at the National Board of Review’s annual film awards on Sunday. “I think it’s just fun to be with a bunch of guys who just push each other to the limit in the gym,” he mused.
The film also features Miles Teller, who we hear pulled out of the National Board of Review event with the sniffles.
Ramirez added of the epic workouts that included Teller, “Every day we start showing up earlier and earlier in the gym … it just brought cohesion to the group.”
The actor landed the coveted role of Lt. Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia in the film.
He also told us that the cast felt pressured to compete with the physiques of the original film.
“We all knew abs were established in the first [film], so we had to take it to another level. So aesthetically I think we felt the need for the challenge. We trained like athletes so we didn’t eat much… just lots of veggies and protein until the end. We trained like we do sports. The training course could start at 05.00. until 07.00, depending on the collection time.”
The film was named best film at the National Board of Review event.
