Second World Cup journalist ‘died suddenly’ after Grant Wahl passes away: report

A second journalist covering the World Cup in Qatar died on Sunday, hours after American soccer journalist Grant Wall died.

Qatari Khalid al-Misslam, a photojournalist for Al Kass TV, “died suddenly” while covering a match in the country, the Khalid Times reported.

“Al Kass TV photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam recently passed away,” the Gulf Times tweeted. “Al-Misslam, a Qatari, passed away suddenly while covering the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. We trust in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for him and extend our deepest condolences to his family.”

The details of his death are unclear. Al Kass TV reportedly mentioned al-Misslam’s death during its broadcast.

His death came hours after Wahl died while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. Reporters near him called for help as Val collapsed on his seat at Lusail Stadium during overtime.

He is covering his eighth World Cup and wrote last Monday that he visited a clinic while in Qatar. He tested negative for COVID-19 and sought treatment.

“My body finally broke down. Three weeks of sleep deprivation, stress and a lot of work can do this to you,” Wahl wrote in his Substack. “The cold of the past 10 days got worse on the night of the US v Holland game and I could feel the new pressure and discomfort in my upper chest.

“I went to the medical clinic in the main media center today and they said I might have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some strong cough syrup and I felt better a few hours later. But still: No bueno.

Val was detained early in the game for wearing a rainbow T-shirt supporting LGBTQ rights. He was initially denied entry before being detained and was later allowed into the stadium.
