Law enforcement sources have confirmed to ABC News that the man who allegedly attacked and wounded three New York City police officers with a machete is a Maine teenager. Sources identified the suspect as 19-year-old Trevor Bickford of Wells. According to the NYPD, Bickford allegedly struck two of the officers in the head with the machete, severing one of their heads and fracturing the other’s skull. All three officers were taken to a hospital and are expected to recover. Police said one of the officers shot Bickford in the shoulder. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. The attack happened just blocks from Manhattan’s crowded New Year’s Eve party, but was outside the secured area, according to the NYPD. The NYPD shared a photo of the blade allegedly used in the attack. New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said there is no active threat to the public. Law enforcement sources said Bickford had taken an Amtrak train from Maine to New York City on Dec. 19. The attack on the officers is being investigated as a possible terrorist incident due to online postings and the method of attack by the 19-year-old suspect, police sources told ABC News. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is working with the NYPD to investigate the attack. This is a development story. Maine’s Total Coverage is working to get more information.
