The business of the World Cup group stage is coming to an end, Groups A and B are done and dusted. So far, France, Portugal, England, Senegal, the United States, the Netherlands and Brazil have confirmed their qualifications for the round of 16. In the final game of each group, there are 9 other teams that will join them. Qatar also joined South Africa as the only World Cup hosts to fail to qualify for the group stage. Let’s see who can join this trio in the last 16 and what their path is to get there.
Looking at the tiebreaker, the start is simple and the team with the most points advances. If the two teams are tied on points then this will affect their overall goal difference. If still unable to decide the winner, the team with the most goals will be the promotion team. The rules will then be reapplied, with head-to-head matches played only between the two teams that were tied. So next up are the points totals for those games, followed by head-to-head goal difference and goals scored. If they make it all the way through and can’t split it, it ends up in the fair play system.

A fair play system will advance the team with the fewest free throws in the game. Thus, a team deducts one point for each yellow card, three points for each red card due to a second yellow card, four points for a direct red card and five points if a yellow card is followed by a direct red card.

- Netherlands: Team winner.
- Senegal: second place

Group B
- U.K: Team winners.
- U.S: second place.

Group C
- Poland: A victory over Argentina will qualify for the round of 16. Saudi Arabia could also advance to the round of 16 if they draw or lose to Mexico, but only then would they win the group stage.
- Argentina: Beat Poland to advance to the round of 16. It is also possible to advance to the round of 16 via a draw with Saudi Arabia or a less than three-goal loss to Mexico. A win and a draw or loss to Saudi Arabia can win the group stage.
- Saudi Arabia: Beat Mexico to advance to the round of 16. It is also possible to advance if Argentina loses a draw or loses a goal to Argentina. (i.e. Saudi Arabia loses 1-0, Argentina loses 2-0, Saudi Arabia advances
- Mexico: Poland beat Argentina to advance to the round of 16.can also be achieved by winning and Make up for Poland/Argentina’s goal difference Argentina beat or drew Poland.
Group D
- France: Qualified for the round of 16. A chance to qualify for the group stage can be secured through a win or draw against Tunisia or a draw or loss against Australia.
- Australia: Beat Denmark to advance to the round of 16. It is also possible to advance with a draw and Tunisia draw or lose.
- Denmark: As long as they beat Australia, they can advance to the round of 16.
- Tunisia: Can advance to the last 16, as long as the victory over France, Australia lost to Denmark, Tunisia scored more goals than Denmark. Tunisia can also qualify for the round of 16 with wins over France and draws with Australia.
Group E
- Spain: Advance to the round of 16 with a win or draw against Japan. Beat Japan to qualify for the group stage. It could also qualify with losses to Japan and a draw with Germany with Costa Rica.
- Japan: Beat Spain to advance to the round of 16. It can also advance to the round of 16 with draws against Spain, Costa Rica and Germany. If they beat Germany, they can win against Spain and have a better goal difference than Costa Rica.
- Costa Rica: Can qualify with a win over Germany and a loss to Spain/Japan or a draw for both. It can also be promoted by Japan with a draw. 1 win and 1 loss to Spain, tying Japan’s 6 goal difference to qualify for the group stage.
- Germany: Spain or Japan will advance to the round of 16 with a win each. It is also possible to advance with a victory by more than one goal and a draw with Japan.
Group F
- Croatia: Beat Belgium to advance to the round of 16. Also qualify with a draw with Belgium and a loss to Canada with Morocco. Only those who beat Morroco can qualify for the group stage.
- Morocco: A win or draw with Canada will qualify for the round of 16. It can also advance to the top 16, lose one loss to Belgium or lose one to Belgium, and the goal difference is better than Croatia. Better than Croatia’s results, making up for the difference of one goal can qualify for the group.
- Belgium: A win over Croatia will advance to the round of 16. They can also advance by losing to Morocco in a draw by more than three goals.
- Canada: Knocked out of the round of 16.
Group G
- Brazil: Advance to the round of 16. If you win or draw with Cameroon, or lose to Switzerland, you can qualify for the group stage.
- Switzerland: Can reach the last 16 with a win or a draw against Serbia. If Brazil wins one game and loses one game, with a goal difference of 3, they will be able to qualify for the group stage.
- Cameroon: Can reach the last 16 with defeats to Brazil and Switzerland. A one-goal win over Brazil and a draw with Switzerland and Serbia would also qualify for the round of 16.
- Serbia: Can reach the last 16 with defeats to Switzerland and losses to Cameroon.
Group H
- Portugal: Into the last 16. Group qualification can be secured through a win or draw against South Korea or a defeat against Ghana.
- Ghana: Can reach the last 16 with a win or a draw against Uruguay. If there is a draw, they need a better goal difference than South Korea to beat Portugal.
- South Korea: Can reach the round of 16 with a win against Portugal and a loss or draw against Uruguay in Ghana.
- Uruguay: They can advance to the round of 16 with a win against Ghana and a loss or draw against Portugal by South Korea. If South Korea and Uruguay win together, they will enter the tiebreaker.
