Canada vs. USA live score, highlights, updates from 2023 World Juniors semifinal

One of the best rivalries in hockey takes center stage in Halifax on Wednesday night, as Canada and the USA square off in the finals of the 2023 World Juniors.

The North American wrestlers meet at the World Juniors for the first time since the 2021 gold medal game. A 34-save shutout by Spencer Knight gave the United States its fifth World Juniors victory, beating the Canadians 2-0.

The story for Canada so far is Connor Bedard. The 17-year-old punched Canada’s ticket to the semis by scoring the overtime winner in the team’s 4-3 win over Slovakia. He sent Canada to the semifinals of four consecutive World Juniors.

That same night, Bedard set several Canadian World Juniors records, including the Team Canada mark for most goals and points. The agreement above can be chosen in the 2023 series is the most exciting in the competition, leading all skaters in goals (eight), assists (13) and points (21).

Opposing the Canadians is an American team that has its sights set on returning to the podium after missing out on a chance to win a medal in the finals. The United States won in the quarterfinals against Germany, defeating the Germans 11-1 behind five assists by Ryan Ufko and a hat trick by Logan Cooley.

The top line of Cooley, Jimmy Snuggerud and Cutter Gauthier is a combination to watch. These three people have gone through the mistakes of the United States. Cooley’s 11 points lead only Bedard in the championship, Snuggerud was third with 10 and Gauthier tied for fifth with eight.

The United States has been very successful in Canada in recent history. While Canada has the advantage in points and points all-time, the Americans have won five of the last six meetings.

7:17 pm – Brandt Clarke went down the Canada tunnel after blocking a shot. That would be a huge loss to Canada’s blue belt if he can’t return.

7:14 pm – Apparently there was a problem with a defect in the ice which caused a huge delay. But the game has now begun.

7:09 pm – The United States has done a great job to get Bedard through the first half of the season. His line doesn’t produce anything offensively, but you can’t take away when Bedard is on the ice and makes the Americans pay.

7:04 pm – Goal! Canada immediately responded by targeting whom? Connor Bedard. The offensive front zone got the puck back to Del Mastro at that point, and he clipped the wall and found Bedard in the backcourt. A big one for Canada, the beneficiary of subpar coverage from Ufko up front. The lead is now 2-1 for the USA with 8:11 to go.

7:01 pm – Goal! Kenny Connors moves to the crease at speed and cleans up the rebound from Charlie Stramel’s shot to double the USA’s lead. Ethan Del Mastro didn’t pick it up as he crashed the net and made it easy to score. 2-0 USA with 9:30 left.

6:59 pm – Luke Hughes was four inches ahead to make it two. He got a pad on the side of the net, he shot it into the net with Milic behind him, but it hit the post.

6:56 pm – US killed the little Duke. Wright’s look from the slot was Canada’s best chance for the man advantage.

6:54 pm – Augustine makes his first big save of the night, denying a one-timer by Shane Wright on a terrific spot on the power play. Brennan Othmann had an open back door, but couldn’t clear the first pass. He took it away from Wright for a clean look, but the USA goalkeeper swallowed it up.

6:52 pm – Well, Duke has to sit down now. He turned around and tried to wipe right over the glass. Canada got the first power play.

6:51 pm – The crowd wanted a delay of game penalty on Dylan Duke, but after the officials spoke, no penalty was called. In that move, it means the puck hits the glass before it goes out of play.

6:48 pm – The Americans are beating Milic now. They had eight shots on goal and the Canadian goal in less than four minutes.

6:42 pm – Goal! USA needed just 1:19 to get on the board. The winning faceoff in the offensive zone results in an attempt by Ryan Ufko. The first shot was blocked, but Logan Cooley collected a loose ball in the gap and beat Milic’s five-pointer. 1-0, USA.

6:41 pm – Canada gets Augustine pressure early. The USA goalie hasn’t been tested a ton in this tournament, and when he has, it hasn’t been during games. Canada didn’t get a shot on net, but there were a few chances in the first quarter.

6:38 pm – The puck dropped in Halifax as the second half progressed.

6:20 pm – Here are the lines for Canada and the USA. Thomas Milic in net for Canada, Trey Augustine in the crease for the USA.

5:18 pm – Czechia advanced to the gold medal game with a comeback win over Sweden. David Jiricek crossed the line in the 38th minute and scored in the second half. Czechia awaits the winner of Canada-USA, while Sweden will play the winner of the bronze medal game.
