Angel City makes Alyssa Thompson the first HS player taken first overall

Alyssa Thompson is staying in Los Angeles with Angel City, and it just needs some NWSL draft history to make that happen.

With the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, Angeles City made the Harvard-Westlake forward the first high school athlete to hear her name in the league’s 10-year history.

Thompson’s selection was widely anticipated after Angel City acquired the No. 1 pick from NJ/NY Gotham FC last week in a trade in which it traded its natural No. 5 pick and a 2024 second-round pick, plus $200,000 in allocated funds, traded to the Portland Thorns for Yazmeen Ryan, then sent Ryan and $250,000 to Gotham City.

The deal makes the 18-year-old Thompson the most expensive player in league history, as the previous most expensive deal by appropriation was the San Diego Wave’s $275,000 acquisition of USWNT star Alex Morgan, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Not to mention Thompson’s agent told TIME’s Luca Evans She has signed a three-year deal with Angel City, which they say is the largest of any NWSL player under the age of 25.

Angel City certainly expects the price to be worth it. Thompson, who previously committed to Stanford, won the prestigious Gatorade High School Player of the Year award in 2021 after scoring 48 goals in 18 games. No, that statistic is not a typo.

Thompson is also one of the top high school sprinters in California and made his senior USWNT debut last year.

Thompson’s entry into the NSWL with no college experience as a top player is not entirely unprecedented, as Washington Spirit star Trinity Rodman joined in 2021 after not playing a game during his collegiate career at Washington State. her team. This move has far more impact on the Holy Spirit than that.
